--Apple-Mail-7E7DAC34-AFDE-4B0A-A9F6-689935DE42DA Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Greetings Auditory Friends and Colleagues, Thank you for completing the SurveyMonkey poll. Surprisingly there were over= 100 responses which exceeds the number accessible to my free SurveyMonkey a= ccount. I=E2=80=99m happy to pay out of pocket but first, it=E2=80=99s impor= tant (critical) that I have everyone=E2=80=99s consent to share, especially t= he comments. Everything is anonymous, although some comments may have disclo= sed identifying details. If you remember your comment and would not like you= r comment shared with this group, please let me know by Friday, February 22,= 2019 by 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time. If there is any general opposition t= o sharing the results with the whole group, please let me know by the same d= eadline. I still have the list of individuals who requested to see the resul= ts and I can just share with them. This survey was administered as an exploratory question. This survey was not= done for research purposes. If results are sent to the listserv, it is the e= xpectation these results are for you, and only you, as a member of this list= serv. It is the expectation these results would *not* be written up for any p= ublication or presentation, unless consent is provided by the listserv and m= yself.=20 Thank you. Best Wishes, Tina Penman On Dec 4, 2018, at 2:10 AM, penman.t@xxxxxxxx Gmail <penman.t@xxxxxxxx> wr= ote: Thank you for the feedback. Etiquette noted. In some cases, I prefer to keep= my messages short and sweet, especially since I know people on this listser= v have limited time. The smaller the word count, the more likely it will be r= ead. Also, it is worth noting that I rarely post to this listserv and though= t that a moderator (a human, not a bot) approved messages to ensure they wer= e safe. Apologies this appeared as spam. Allow me to reword if I may. Here is my revision with major edits for the or= iginal email I sent a couple hours ago.=20 * * * * * Revision with MAJOR edits * * * * * Dear Members of the McGill Auditory Listserv, I am writing to see how long you spend reviewing a peer-reviewed manuscript.= If you feel inclined to respond to this anonymous survey, please Click here= . This survey link is not spam. If you hover over the hyperlink, you can see= it directs to a SurveyMonkey hyperlink. If you do not feel inclined to resp= ond to this anonymous survey, no need to click the link.=20 This question was inspired because I was onboarding a new member to my Edito= rial Board and wanted to provide that member with an expectation for how lon= g each review should take. The quantity of words or the length of time we sp= end is relative. However, when inviting (persuading) a new editorial board m= ember to volunteer in this capacity, it is my ethical duty as Editor to prov= ide them an expectation about how many hours they would be expected to volun= teer. This is particularly true for new reviewers who are familiar with rese= arch, but less familiar with the intricacies and politics of the peer-review= process. By letting new reviewers know how much time (on average) should be= spent on a manuscript, in addition to why it takes that amount of time, the= scientific rigor of the peer-review process is preserved.=20 Of course there are many factors that can influence the length of time spent= reviewing a manuscript, but I asked myself, =E2=80=9COn average, can the le= ngth of time be categorized?=E2=80=9D Therefore, I decided to crowdsource th= is question by inviting my inclusive, supportive, and collaborative colleagu= es to take this very brief, two-question survey on SurveyMonkey. This question appears to have piqued subscriber interest. Within the first h= our of this message being approved, five colleagues asked me to share result= s. One colleague suggested results be shared with everyone. If there is no o= bjection, I will share results with the list in approximately 1-2 weeks. Man= y of you may be curious about the results, as this topic is rarely discussed= in public forum. Perhaps due to fear of judgement or criticism from colleag= ues, especially if it=E2=80=99s perceived that a reviewer is spending less (= or perhaps even more) time than the social norm. Because this survey is anon= ymous, it is my hope that respondents provide honest answers.=20 Thank you for your consideration and time. Best Wishes, Tina Penman * * * * * End Revision * * * * * Elif, I presented this message in a way that is reflective, playful, and gen= uine. If you were a reviewer for my revision above, what do you think? Accep= t? Major edits? Minor? Reject? Even though I=E2=80=99m quiet on this listser= v, I value being a part of this group and wish to avoid the label of lacking= email etiquette. I warmly welcome your feedback.
