It contributes to the selection and optimization of=20 clinical treatment as well as to the evaluation of the treatment=20 outcome. Levels of description of voice quality include the biomechanics=20 of the vocal folds and their kinematics, temporal and spectral acoustic=20 features, as well as the auditory scoring of hoarseness, hyper- and=20 hypo-functionality, creakiness, diplophonia, harshness, etc. Broad and=20 fuzzy definitions of terms regarding voice quality are in use, which=20 impede scientific and clinical communication. The aim of the special session is to contribute to the improvement of=20 the clinical assessment of voice quality via a translational approach,=20 which focuses on quantifying and explaining relationships between=20 several levels of description. The goal is to objectify voice quality=20 via (i) the analysis and simulation of vocal fold vibrations by means of=20 high-speed videolaryngoscopy in combination with kinematic or mechanical=20 modelling, (ii) the synthesis of disordered voices joint with auditory=20 experimentation involving disordered voice stimuli, as well as (iii) the=20 statistical analysis and automatic classification of distinct types of=20 voice quality via video and/or audio features.
