Dr. Elise Piazza=92s research focuses on the cognitive and neural mechanism= s of human auditory perception and communication across the lifespan, inclu= ding how musicians coordinate during performance, how musical training impa= cts the hierarchical organization of sounds in the brain, and how listeners= compute summary statistics (or concise =93gist=94 representations) of comp= lex sounds. Dr. Piazza=92s recent work has revealed how mothers adapt their vocal timbr= e to accommodate infants=92 perceptual demands, as well as the role of neur= al coupling in natural communicative interactions (e.g., singing), using fN= IRS. She is currently investigating the neural underpinnings of live musica= l performance using MR-compatible instruments in the fMRI scanner and will = continue this work at the U of R.
