The figure illustrates the capabilities of binaural hearing. Binaural = hearing is like trying to get information about the nature and location = of the boats on the lake by observing the waves they generate with the = two tissues (eardrums). I think the analogy mainly refers to amplitude = differences and delays between the waves in the two canals depending on = boat location/direction and wave amplitude and frequency depending on = boat shape/size (but both is not explicitly mentioned in the figure = caption).
