The topics cover fundamental aspect= s of neural coding and signal processing at various levels along the audito= ry pathway, consequences for auditory perception in various acoustic enviro= nments, and implications for compensation strategies for people with hearin= g impairment. Held every th= ree years in Europe, the aim of this interdisciplinary meeting is to bring = together established researchers promising younger researchers specializing= in psychophysics, physiology, and models of hearing. The goal is to stimul= ate discussion of the physiological mechanisms underlying auditory percepti= on, promote the discovery of new links between areas, and provide the basis= for a better understanding of auditory function. ISH 2018 was held in Snekkersten, Denmark from June 10-15. The special issu= e includes papers from forty-three of the symposium presentations. The sele= ction of papers was done in parallel with the symposium and all papers were= subjected to the regular peer-review process of the journal.
