In the last few years, Derek featured in the seri= es=C2=A0Extraordinary People=C2=A0(Channel 5, UK), and on BBC1, BBC2 and IT= V. He has appeared in documentaries in Japan, Germany, Australia and the US= A =E2=80=93 including three times on CBS=E2=80=99s prestigious =E2=80=9860 = Minutes=E2=80=99 programme. As a result of the oxygen ther= apy required to save his life, Derek lost his sight, and his development wa= s affected too. It later became apparent that he had severe learning diffic= ulties and exhibited many of the traits of autism. However, he soon acquire= d a fascination for music and sound, and, by the age of four, he had alread= y taught himself to play a large number of pieces on the piano, of some mel= odic and harmonic complexity (such as =E2=80=98Smoke Gets in your Eyes=E2= =80=99). Almost inevitably, with no visual models to guide him, his techniq= ue was chaotic, and even his elbows would frequently be pressed into servic= e, as he strove to reach intervals beyond the span of his tiny hands! =C2=A0 At this time, his enormous potential was recognised by Professor Adam Ockel= ford, then music teacher at Linden Lodge School for the Blind in London. In= due course, weekly and then daily lessons were arranged, in an extensive p= rogramme of one-to-one tuition that was to last for a decade. Painstakingly= (through physical demonstration and imitation) Derek acquired the foundati= ons of technique that were necessary for him to move forward. His natural a= ffinity for jazz, pop and light music soon became evident; together with hi= s improvisatory talents, ability to play in any key, and love of performing= in public! =C2=A0 There is no doubt that Derek has a truly unique musical mind and is increas= ingly performing with his own musical voice. It=E2=80=99s not just that he = can learn just about any piece by ear with great rapidity, or that he now k= nows literally thousands of compositions, just by having listened to them o= ver the years. As a result of the= oxygen therapy required to save his life, Derek lost his sight, and his de= velopment was affected too. It later became apparent that he had severe lea= rning difficulties and exhibited many of the traits of autism. However, he = soon acquired a fascination for music and sound, and, by the age of four, h= e had already taught himself to play a large number of pieces on the piano,= of some melodic and harmonic complexity (such as =E2=80=98Smoke Gets in yo= ur Eyes=E2=80=99).
