Successful applicants will join a vibrant hearing research group with stron= g collaborative links with experts in online developments, mental health an= d health behaviour psychology. Awards offer a stipend of =A314,553 - =A315,000 per annum. Fees paid for Ho= me/EU students. The closing date for applications is 22 May 2017 Increasing engagement with an online self-management programme for hearing = loss For long-term health conditions, including hearing loss, it is recognised t= hat if patients are actively involved in the day-to-day management of their= own care they are more likely to adopt health behaviours that lead to bett= er outcomes. Our team has already developed and evaluated patient education= for hearing aids and communication (www.youtube.com/C2HearOnline<http://ww= w.youtube.com/C2HearOnline>). This PhD will further extend our existing wor= k to identify and examine key aspects of self-management for hearing loss, = with the aim to maximise patient engagement and effectiveness of digital he= aring healthcare interventions. This will be based on health behaviour chan= ge theory (COM-B) and a recent conceptual framework to increase patient eng= agement. For more information and to apply: http://www.hearing.nihr.ac.uk/vacancies/= phd-studentship-increasing-engagement-with-an-online-self-management-progra Developing understanding of the relationship between hearing loss and menta= l health The main aim of this PhD project is to develop a theoretical framework that= helps to explain the relationship between hearing loss and mental health. = This project will explore the impact of hearing loss on mental wellbeing fo= r both people with hearing loss and their communication partners (e.g. fami= ly members and friends). In addition, this project will identify barriers a= nd facilitators for individuals with hearing loss to obtaining support for = their mental health. The project will use grounded theory to develop a theo= retical framework to define strategies for promoting good mental wellbeing = for people with hearing loss to form the basis for developing and testing f= uture interventions. For more information and to apply: http://www.hearing.nihr.ac.uk/vacancies/= phd-studentship-developing-understanding-of-the-relationship-between-hearin The role of online peer support groups in the self-management of hearing lo= ss: A mixed methods approach With increased access to the Internet and advances in information and commu= nication technology, there has been an exponential increase in the number o= f individuals living with long-term conditions, who access and participate = in online peer-to-peer support groups. Whilst there is an increasing body = of literature that has examined the reasons for this growth in popularity a= nd the impact of engagement on psycho-social outcomes across a range of lon= g-term conditions, there has been a conspicuous absence of research which h= as considered how online support groups may support the ongoing self-manage= ment of individuals living with hearing loss. This PhD research will transl= ate into a format that can be used within clinical populations and clinical= practice.
