Please spread this=20 information to anyone who could be interested ! Thanks, E. Parizet *PhD Position: **Annoyance due to noise and vibrations from railway=20 traffic in cities* ** Vibrations due to rail vehicles (e.g. tramway, train) propagate from the=20 tracks to inside neighbour houses. These vibrations can be detected by=20 people but they can also make some panels to move, thus creating noise.=20 In the case of surface transportation these phenomena are associated=20 with the vehicle pass-by noise. This co-exposition to noise and=20 vibration is a source of annoyance, as well as of some health issues. Few studies have been conducted to investigate this co-exposition in=20 terms of annoyance. They use indices which only describe an amount of=20 energy for each separate exposition. Results can be contradictory. These=20 contradictions could be due to differences in the level or frequency=20 content in the noise or vibration signals used in the experiments. The=20 state of the art shows that more investigations are needed to get a=20 better understanding of this co-exposition. Experiments should be=20 conducted in laboratory as well as /in situ/ in order to bring to light=20 all perceptual phenomena related to annoyance. The goal of the thesis is to improve the knowledge of the perceptual=20 phenomena involved in a combined noise and vibration exposure. Intensity=20 evaluation will be studied, as intensity is well-known to have a key=20 influence on annoyance. As an example, is loudness modified by a=20 simultaneous vibration stimulus? What about the reverse interaction? First, real signals (measured in buildings) will be analysed. Main=20 temporal or spectral characteristics will be evaluated and their=20 contribution to annoyance will be determined in the case of a single=20 exposition. Then, multi-modal situations will be studied in laboratory,=20 using controlled and real stimuli. These studies will use existing=20 experimental facilities. Supervisors: E. Parizet, Laboratoire Vibrations et Acoustique of INSA de=20 Lyon and C. Marquis-Favre, Laboratoire G=C3=A9nie Civil et B=C3=A2timent of= ENTPE,=20 both members of CeLyA (Acoustical Center of Lyon). Job location: Villeurbanne and Vaulx-en-Velin (Lyon area, France). Salary will be consistent with levels in accordance with the upper=20 standards for this position. The appointment period will be for 3 years (starting by the end of 2015).
