Please read on for details of a call for articles for a special issue on the sonification of real-time data for Elsevier's journal 'Displays'. The CfP is reproduced below but can also be found at http://www.journals.elsevier.com/displays/call-for-papers/special-issue-on-s onification-of-real-time-data/ Sonification, a form of auditory display, is concerned with the representation of data and information using non-speech audio. Sonification research lies at the intersections of a number of disciplines including computer science and engineering, perceptual psychology, physics, acoustics, music, and aesthetics. Sonification is increasingly being used to transform data into sound in situations and environments where to use more traditional visual display technology would be unwieldy, impractical, or even impossible. Examples might include bio-mechanical data in elite sports training, vehicular navigation tasks, or maintaining situation awareness in complex computer network administration tasks. What these scenarios have in common is that they take place in real time and the data being transformed into sound is generated in real time. This special issue aims to present high-quality original research results in the sonification of real-time data and related areas. Articles demonstrating new directions in research, evaluations of methods, empirical studies, and theoretical treatments are welcome. Authors are encouraged to provide audio examples in their submissions. About the Topics of Interest In particular, relevant topics include but are not limited to Situation awareness Sonification of networks/network traffic Aesthetic issues in real-time sonification Design methodology for real-time sonification Sports training, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and human motion sonification Sonification of real-time time/space processes Sonification for medical diagnostics with real-time data Sonification for vehicular operation/navigation Sonification for wayfinding tasks Comparisons of situation awareness, reaction times, etc. where visual display is possible but impairs performance compared to sonification Articles must be based on original research but extended versions of previously published conference papers may be acceptable if they contain at least 50% new material. Submission Format and Guidelines All submitted papers must be clearly written in excellent English and contain only original work, which has not been published by or be currently under review for any other journal or conference. Papers must not exceed 25 pages (one-column, at least 11pt fonts) including figures, tables, and references. All manuscripts and any supplementary material should be submitted through the Elsevier Editorial System (EES). Authors should select ³SI: RT SONIFICATION² when reaching the ³Article Type² step in the submission process. The EES website is located at: http://ees.elsevier.com/displa/.
