We are still looking for qualified applications for a 4 years PhD position on the topic: Psychoacoustic modeling of sound impact on cognitive performance. Hosting organization is Philips Research Eindhoven, the Netherlands, Smart sensing and analysis group. Main contact and thesis supervisor is Armin Kohlrausch. This position is part of the EU funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network BATWOMAN (Basic Acoustics Training - & Workprogram On Methodologies for Acoustics - Network). Information about this network can be found here: http://www.batwoman.eu/ The position at Philips Research links room acoustic and perceptual models with recent insights how sound characteristics impact cognition and well-being. The motivation for the research is the ongoing trend in workplace arrangements towards open plan offices. Such environments offer an increased flexibility in workplace layout but introduce potential problems due to the interference of concentration and communication needs. The goal of this PhD project is to broaden our understanding of the distractive effects on cognitive processes caused by sounds in the environment. In particular, we want to develop predictive models that allow quantifying this distraction for specific processes, like recall from working memory. For further information on this position and ways to apply follow this link: https://philips.taleo.net/careersection/2/moresearch.ftl and enter job number: 051265 Applications are invited via the WEB portal of the hosting institution; current application deadline is January 31, 2014. Please pay attention to the specific requirements of the Marie Curie Program regarding international mobility and experience level, which are described in detail in the job description.
