Many thanks, Paula ------------------------------------------------------------ PhD Studentship at Nottingham Trent University See you, hear you: The contribution of visual information to understanding = speech in background noise Supervisors: Dr Paula Stacey, Dr Christina Howard, and Prof David Crundall Overview of project Being able to see the face of a talker helps people to understand speech in= noisy environments. This visual information is thought to be particularly = beneficial to people who have impaired hearing, such as cochlear implant us= ers. This project will examine whether the ability to benefit from visual s= peech information varies according to the fidelity of the auditory signal, = and whether audiovisual training aids listening in noisy environments. This= topic is both relevant for audiovisual integration theories and is practic= ally useful in trying to improve the ability of hearing impaired people to = successfully process speech in noisy environments. Entry requirement A good UK honours degree or equivalent in a related subject. Funding This studentship is part of the Vice-Chancellor's PhD Scholarships scheme, = and is therefore in competition for funding with other projects available a= t NTU. Usually the projects which receive the best applicants will be award= ed funding (12 VC studentships will be funded across NTU). Applications for= this project are welcome from suitably qualified candidates worldwide. The studentships will pay UK/EU fees and provide a maintenance stipend link= ed to the RCUK rate (=A313,726 per annum for 2013/14) for up to three years= .
