The submission deadline is October 15, 2013, only a short mon= th and half away. Looking forward to your contributions!=20 ----------------------------- 2nd CALL FOR PAPERS Journal of New Music Research Special Issue -- Musical Rhythm: Cross-disciplinary and Multi-cultural Pers= pectives ----------------------------- Short Description: =20 Variously defined as =93organized duration=94 (Kolinski, 1973), =93the many= different ways in which time is organized in music=94 (Bamberger, 2000) an= d the =93language of time=94 (Lewis, 2005), the attribute of rhythm is of c= entral concern to all music studies. Nevertheless, it is only in recent dec= ades that the subject has received the attention it deserves, producing rhy= thmic theories on a par with those for pitch structure; musicological studi= es providing a more nuanced understanding of the historical and cultural co= ntext that informs the creation and reception of rhythm; rhythm-based compu= tational models that are applicable to music search, computational musicolo= gy, and interactive music systems; as well as new science allowing us to un= derstand the biological mechanisms behind music and rhythm processing, and = the effects of rhythm information on human perception and cognition. Yet, m= ost of this research is confined within the bounds of single disciplines, a= nd limited to specific music traditions, mostly western popular music. =20 This special issue aims to group novel, high-quality research on musical rh= ythm. The emphasis is on interactions between scholars from various discipl= ines -- including music theory, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, musicol= ogy, music information retrieval, performance and composition -- and on an = increased awareness of music outside the Western canon. By focusing on the = presentation and discussion of interdisciplinary cross-cultural research on= musical rhythm, this volume seeks to expand the horizons of traditional mu= sic scholarship in unprecedented ways. The issue follows the workshop of th= e same name that was held in Abu Dhabi, between March 18-21, 2013: https://sites.google.com/site/nyurhythmworkshop/ =20 We invite contributions including, but not limited, to the following topics: =20 =B7 Rhythm well-formedness, complexity and syncopation =B7 Pulse, beat and meter analysis =B7 Meter-less rhythms =B7 Polyrhythms =B7 Groove, swing and micro-timing =B7 Rhythmic performance analysis =B7 Computational models of rhythm =B7 Rhythm-based similarity, classification and search =B7 Automatic rhythm generation =B7 Rhythm perception and cognition =B7 Neural processing of rhythm, rhythms of the brain =B7 Connection between musical and speech/language rhythms =B7 The role of timbre, melody and other musical attributes on rhythm= structure =B7 Culture-specific and cross-cultural rhythm studies =20 ----------------------------- Important Dates: Manuscript Submission Due: October 15, 2013 First Notification: March 1, 2014 Final Version of Manuscripts: September 1, 2014 Tentative Publication Date: Late 2014 or early 2015 =20 ----------------------------- Guest Editors: Juan Pablo Bello, Associate Professor of Music Technology, New York Univers= ity Carlos Guedes, Associate Music Professor, NYU Abu Dhabi Robert Rowe, Professor of Music Composition and Technology, New York Univer= sity Godfried Toussaint, Research Professor of Computer Science, NYU Abu Dhabi --------------------------------------------------- Juan Pablo Bello Associate Professor, Music Technology New York University jpbello@xxxxxxxx https://files.nyu.edu/jb2843/public/ http://marl.smusic.nyu.edu/ --Apple-Mail=_211D3ECA-F32A-484D-8230-9E2E4BAA3889 Content-Type: text/html; charset=windows-1252 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/htm= l4/strict.dtd"> <html> <head> </head> <body style=3D"background-color: #fff;"> <span style=3D"display:none">&nbsp;</span> <!--~-|**|PrettyHtmlStartT|**|-~--> <div id=3D"ygrp-mlmsg" style=3D"position:relative;"> <div id=3D"ygrp-msg" style=3D"z-index: 1;"> <!--~-|**|PrettyHtmlEndT|**|-~--> <div id=3D"ygrp-text" > =20=20=20=20=20=20 =20=20=20=20=20=20 <p><div>Dear all,</div><div><div>(Apologies for any cross-posting.
