The project aim is=20 to learn how to optimally combine a CI with residual hearing for the=20 benefit of hearing-impaired individuals with single-sided deafness (SSD:=20 normal hearing in one ear and profound or complete loss in the other=20 ear). SSD is a common clinical complaint that also provides an ideal=20 model with which to study effective combination of electrical hearing=20 through a CI in one ear, and acoustic hearing in the other, normal=20 hearing ear. Specifically, the project will investigate the use of=20 monaural and binaural cues for analysing the auditory scene using a=20 variety of psychophysical experimental techniques already established in=20 the research team, e.g. our internationally-recognised spatial hearing=20 assessment facilities. The studies will provide crucial knowledge for=20 future improvements of CIs which will be gained and translated through=20 our close collaboration with hearing device manufacturers. New proposals=20 will be developed over the next 5 years and may include further work to=20 improve implant fitting and signal processing. The successful candidate=20 will be involved in all aspects of research including development,=20 design, implementation and dissemination of research findings. The successful candidate will independently lead research studies=20 related to cochlear implantation. They will define research objectives=20 in collaboration with senior colleagues, setting up and managing=20 resources in order to achieve research outputs. They will need to keep=20 abreast of the general literature and critically review the literature=20 relating to the research area and manage and perform appropriate=20 statistical analysis of research data using relevant software packages=20 and interpret findings. They will also be responsible for developing=20 research proposals and seeking and securing funding in collaboration=20 with colleagues within NBRUH and in other organisations nationally and=20 internationally.
