I am happy to answer any questions. http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/Jobs/CurrentVacancies/ref/MED1048 Best wishes, Bernhard School of Clinical Sciences in association with the NIHR National Biomedical Research Unit in Hearing Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow in Translational Hearing Research (Cochlear Implantation) (Fixed-term) The NIHR National Biomedical Research Unit in Hearing (NBRUH) is a partnership between Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, the University of Nottingham and the Medical Research Council Institute of Hearing Research. It employs approximately 30 academic, technical and administrative staff, all based in newly refurbished Trust premises in the centre of Nottingham. The Unit has recently successfully renewed its funding from the NIHR from April 2012 through to 31 March 2017. We are now looking to appoint a researcher at either Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow level to join a multi-disciplinary research team concerned with basic and translational research on hearing and auditory perception with the aim to increase the benefit from cochlear implants. The candidate will work in close association with the Auditory Perception and Signal Processing group (led by Dr Seeber) at the MRC Institute of Hearing Research in Nottingham. The project aim is to learn how to optimally combine a cochlear implant in one ear with near-normal hearing in the other ear for the benefit of hearing-impaired individuals with single-sided deafness. Single-sided deafness, that is normal hearing in one ear and profound hearing loss in the other, provides an ideal model to study the information delivered by cochlear implants. Specifically, the project will investigate the use of monaural and binaural cues for hearing sounds in a background of other sounds (“auditory scene analysis”) using a variety of psychophysical experimental techniques already established in the research team, e.g. our internationally-recognised spatial hearing assessment facilities. The studies will provide crucial knowledge for future improvements of cochlear implants which will be translated through our collaboration with hearing device manufacturers. The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of research including development, design, implementation and dissemination of research findings which includes publishing as first or co-author in peer-reviewed academic journals. If you have a proven track record of research experience, you will be given greater autonomy to develop the research direction, supervise students and seek additional funding for related projects. Candidates at Research Fellow level should have a BSc or equivalent in a relevant discipline and a PhD or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline. In the absence of a PhD, a strong degree of relevant experience in the research area will be considered. Training and skills in quantitative research methods are essential as is a good working knowledge of computer programming, preferably in Matlab, of analysing and interpreting data, and of using statistical tests. Research experience with psychophysical experiments which should cover study design, planning, development of tests, data collection, analysis and interpretation is essential. Good data management and database skills are also required. The successful candidate will have made a substantial scientific contribution to manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and will be developing a recognised national reputation in a relevant field. In addition to the above, candidates at Senior Research Fellow level will have post-doctoral research experience in a relevant field. They will also have experience in research leadership including initiating, sustaining and pursuing a research plan, a consistent track record of published research recognised by peers, experience of contribution to grant proposals for collaborative research, and a track record of successful grant capture. A recognised national reputation in a relevant field is also a prerequisite. Salary, depending on skills and experience, will be within the range: • Research Fellow scale: £27,578 - £35,938 per annum • Senior Research Fellow scale: £35,938 - £44,166 per annum Salary progression beyond these scales is subject to performance. This full-time post is now available. At Research Fellow level the post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 March 2015 whilst at Senior Fellow level it will be offered until end March 2017.
