Dear List, The ACOUSTICS 2012 HONG KONG Conference and Exhibition will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 13 to 18 May 2012. The Conference consists of a joint meeting of the 163rd meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), the 8th meeting of the Acoustical Society of China (ASC), the 11th Western Pacific Acoustics Conference (WESPAC), and the Hong Kong Institute of Acoustics (HKIOA) The Musical Acoustics section of ASA, along with counterparts from HKIOA, ASC, and WESPAC, are sponsoring the following structured sessions (and one "thematic session"). Contributed papers for these sessions are welcome for consideration. Paper abstracts can be submitted at http://acoustics2012hk.org/ . The abstract due date is November 15, 2011. Registration ($700 regular; $300 students) is required for submission but is refundable if the paper is not accepted. All talks will be 20 minutes duration. Structured (Special) Sessions: Asian String Instruments Organized by: Chris Waltham, Tianreng Hua Materials, construction, vibrational analysis of sound boxes, sound radiation, string properties Asian Wind Instruments Organized by: James Cottingham, Shigeru Yoshikawa, Yuebei Wu Acoustical characteristics of Asian wind instruments which have design constraints different from comparable Western instruments Musical Timbre: Perception and Analysis/Synthesis (Joint with Psychological and Physiological Acoustics) Organized by: James Beauchamp, Andrew Horner Timbre discrimination, classification, and dissimilarity judgment, timbral parameter estimation and visualization; timbre interpolation (morphing); and parametric sound synthesis Singing Voice in Asian Cultures (Joint with Speech Communication) Organized by: Johan Sundberg, Ken-Ichi Sakakibara, Baoqiang Han Special voice characteristics used in various types of vocal music in Asian cultures Acoustics of Traditional Musical Practices and Instruments (Joint with Psychological and Physiological Acoustics and Signal Processing in Acoustics) Organized by: Jean-Pierre Hermand, Stephanie Weisser, Quan Zheng Focus on traditional non-western musical instruments and practices, investigated from a multidisciplinary angle, with methodological and theoretical frameworks developed in different disciplines Thematic Session: Sound technologies for multi-modal communication Organized by: William Martens, Shuichi Sakamoto Exploration of results of research on auditory perception and multimodal interaction. The scope of topics includes development and evaluation of multimedia experiences in which congruence of sensory information in multi-modal display systems is potentially important, such as experiences of telepresence in which an observer witnesses a remotely-captured event, or moves through virtual world. ----- James W.
