Reply to: Suggestions for touch screen tablets for auditory experiments. Ben, I also used a touch screen monitor, for the same reasons (elderly participants, some unfamiliar with the mouse) and the computer "saw" the monitor just as it did the mouse, so we didn't need to do any special programming at all. I had an ELO touchscreen. I spent some time researching the different touch systems - resistance, capacitance...but for simple applications it probably doesn't matter. One thing I did want to share is that our monitor stood upright like a typical computer monitor. This had 2 limitations -- our subjects often tested for a long time and didn't want many breaks (1-2 hours) and I always worried about repetitive motion injuries from the frequent up/down movement of their wrists to select items on the screen. The other issue came up when we used soundfield testing at 0 degree azimuth - it was a little tricky to position the speaker so they would face it and also be able to see the screen/respond. We ended up taking the monitor off its stand and laying it down on the table, with a binder underneath to slant it a bit. If I did this again, I would buy a handheld tablet instead of the table monitor. But now we use a mouse, and our participants have no problems - everyone is more computer savvy, be it 30 or 90 years old!
