Dear colleagues, Happy new year! I am pleased to announce a completely updated website for the Society for Music Perception & Cognition (SMPC): http://www.musicperception.org Among other things, the site contains: 1. Upcoming conferences in the field of music cognition 2. A Google map of music cognition labs (under "Resources") 3. SMPC's YouTube channel (suggestions for further content are welcome) If you are interested in music cognition, please consider joining SMPC. It's just $41 for a two-year membership, and members receive a biweekly digest with information on jobs, graduate and postdoc opportunities, conferences, etc. You can join via the website. Also, if you teach a course in music cognition, and would like to have the syllablus posted on our website as a resource for other faculty and for prospective students, please send a pdf of your most recent syllabus to: webmaster@xxxxxxxx We will post syllabli on our "Courses in Music Cognition" page. Please make sure your syllabus has your name, the name of the course, and the department and institution in which it is offered. Please also indicate the date when this course was last taught (e.g., "Fall 2009"). Please use this format in the subject line: "Syllabus, {city, institution}" Ex: "Syllabus, San Diego, UCSD" Regards, Ani Patel President, SMPC Aniruddh D. Patel, Ph.D. Esther J. All SMPC members will continue to be notified of important society-related information.) ------------------------------- 1 of 3 messages ------------------------------- *** Tenure-Track Position, Assistant Professor Level *** http://www.mcmaster.ca/vpacademic/MusicTheoryandCognition.html The School of the Arts at McMaster University is seeking an outstanding individual for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence July 1, 2011. Specific areas of expertise are in Music Theory and Music Cognition. Candidates must have a doctoral degree in music or psychology, and demonstrated potential for leading a strong research program in Music Theory and/or Music Cognition. A deep understanding of music and psychology is essential, and previous university-level teaching experience is desirable. McMaster University is a research intensive university based in Hamilton, Ontario (40 miles from Toronto and 70 miles from Buffalo, NY). The Faculty of Humanities is in the midst of a revitalization, with a strong commitment to the Cognitive Science of Music and Language. The university currently houses three independent music cognition labs, and hosts an annual Music and the Mind workshop bringing world leaders in music cognition to campus for lectures, concerts, and an all-day scientific workshop. McMaster is in the process of constructing a new $6 million CFI-funded concert hall/research facility offering virtual acoustics technology and touchpad responses on each of the venue*s 100 seats. It is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to the anticipated creation of a graduate program in Music Cognition and Music Education by offering expertise in music theory/cognition. Applicants are encouraged to provide evidence of their suitability for this goal with respect to their research and/or teaching experience. It is expected that the successful candidate's interests and abilities will build upon existing strengths at McMaster in Music Theory, Music Cognition, Perception, Neuroscience and Linguistic Cognitive Science by using one (or more) of these fields to inform their research. In addition to developing and maintaining an active research profile of international stature, the candidate will be expected to teach core undergraduate music courses in music theory, and contribute to course offerings in the anticipated graduate program. The precise nature of participation in the graduate program will depend upon strengths and interests of the successful applicant. Sample contributions to this could include (1) A course surveying research on the cognitive roots of music theory, (2) a seminar on research methodology in music, or (3) a graduate seminar in music theory informed by readings in music perception/cognition. Additionally, interest and/or experience in designing a seminar on theory pedagogy (training graduate students to teach music theory) would also be highly desirable. Other teaching responsibilities will reflect the strengths of the successful candidate, and could include musicology, music education, conducting, composition, keyboard harmony, aural skills, etc. Applicants should include a letter of application, full CV including a list of publications, a research statement outlining future research goals/plans, and a statement of teaching interests. Candidates should arrange to have three confidential letters of reference sent directly to the address below. Applications and supporting documentation should be clearly marked ※Music Theory/Music Cognition position§ and addressed to: Dr. Keith Kinder, Director School of the Arts McMaster University 1280 Main St. W. Hamilton, Ontario Canada L8S 4M2 Complete applications, including supporting documents, which are received by January 31, 2011, will be assured of consideration. ------------------------------- 2 of 3 messages ------------------------------- ***Postdoctoral Research Fellows *** ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders (CCD) Macquarie University, Sydney Six or more positions are available for outstanding early career researchers to join the new ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders (CCD). The appointees will carry out and publish research in one or more domains of cognition or its disorders, assist in PhD supervision and contribute to the intellectual life of the Centre.
