According= to the Helmholtz consonance theory that change is due to the presence or a= bsence of beats generated by pairs of partial tones of almost equal frequen= cies. These partials tend to be soft, and their frequencies tend to be high= . The only data I have is knowing that s= ome of my summer students the last few years I had any at Bell Labs had wor= se hearing than the 50 year old guy who has worked in the audio industry fo= r 35 years has.
