--Apple-Mail-55--518759891 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=WINDOWS-1252; format=flowed; delsp=yes Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable CIM10 Nature versus Culture, 21st - 24th July 2010, University of =20 Sheffield, UK CALL FOR PAPERS [extended deadline] The Conferences on Interdisciplinary Musicology promote collaborations =20= between sciences and humanities, between theory and practice, as well =20= as interdisciplinary combinations that are new, unusual, creative, or =20= otherwise especially promising. CIM10 will focus on the relationship =20 between nature and culture in musical behaviour, thinking and sound. With the influence of evolutionary theory, and the interpenetration of =20= the approaches and methods of the sciences and arts, researchers from =20= many different fields have become interested in how culture and =20 biology shape musical phenomena. To what extent is the music that gets =20= made (its materials and structure) a direct product of physical and =20 biological properties? How is the experience of music governed by =20 biological mechanisms and cultural processes? The conference aims to bring together representatives of the arts and =20= humanities, the sciences, and musical practice who are involved in =20 research on culture and nature in music. Researchers from all relevant =20= disciplines are invited to contribute theoretical, empirical and =20 computational studies. The following topic areas illustrate the scope of the conference theme: x Music=92s evolutionary origins x Cross-cultural comparison of musical phenomena x Linguistic influences on music cognition x How culture and biology shape the phenomenal experience of musical =20 expectation x Biological and cultural influences on the experience of emotions =20 with music x Relationship between emotional experience with music and emotions in =20= daily life x Development of musical skills x Musical universals and musical specializations x Cognitive and physical constraints shaping musical materials and =20 compositional practices Submissions are encouraged that are related to these sub-areas or the =20= general theme of nature versus culture. The project should involve a =20 collaboration between at least two authors representing different =20 disciplines. See website for submission details.
