Continuing the side-tracking:
As a grad student at Indiana, I laid out some crackpot theory in class with
the preamble:
"Well, of course, I'm not a phoneticist but I think..."
and Bob Port (or Fred Cummins? or Mike Gasser? I  can't remember who) burst
out laughing and said:
"CLEARLY you're not. They're called *phoneticians*"

That quieted me down.

Did I get it right? To this day I overcorrect... can never remember what
those people call themselves :-)
