The Music Technology program of New York University (NYU) invites applications for the following two positions: - A 3-year PhD scholarship to investigate statistical models for the characterization of harmonic structure in musical audio. - A 2-year post-doctoral position to investigate the use of sequence- based representations of musical audio for music information retrieval applications. These research activities form part of the new project "Improving Access to Digital Music through Content-based Analysis", supported by a National Leadership Grant from the US Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This 3-year initiative, a collaboration between NYU's Music Technology Program and Library Services, aims at using content-based approaches to increase the scalability and reduce the cost of music analysis and markup, while increasing access and dissemination of music in digital archives. The work will be supervised by Dr Juan P. Bello (http://homepages.nyu.edu/~jb2843), and will take place in the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions of New York University. The project is scheduled to start December 1st, 2008. Successful candidates will be expected to start work on that date, or as soon as possible thereafter. Any enquiries should be addressed to jpbello@xxxxxxxx Application deadline: November 7 2008. **********Post-doctoral position************** Applicants must be able to demonstrate a track record of research and publication in music information retrieval or related disciplines, and should have completed (or be close to completing) their doctoral degree. Excellent mathematical, computer science and programming skills are essential. Signal processing and music expertise would be advantageous. The post-doctoral position is for 2 years, the starting salary is $50,000/year, with a 3.5% inflationary adjustment for the second year. Health benefits are included. Applicants are invited to email: a letter of intent, full CV, list of publications and the names of 3 references to: jpbello@xxxxxxxx **********PhD position*********************** Applicants must have a master's degree in computer science, electronic engineering, mathematics, physics or related disciplines and are expected to demonstrate a record of excellence in academic performance. Advanced mathematical and programming skills are also a must. Previous experience in music, music information retrieval and/ or audio signal processing is desirable, but not mandatory. The PhD scholarship is for 3 years and include: full tuition remission plus fees, a yearly stipend of US $28,000 including summer compensation, and health benefits. For detailed information about the curriculum, admission requirements and application process please go to: https://www.nyu.edu/projects/ mtr/musictech/Programs/doctoral.html IMPORTANT: In addition to the application process described on the program's site, applicants are requested to send copies of: - Completed graduate admission application form. - Most recent Curriculum Vitae (including the name of 3 references). - A 2-3 page statement of objectives: a short essay discussing your ideas for doctoral research, their context and potential impact, and arguing how your expertise and interests make you the best candidate for pursuing this research. to: Juan P.
