Zhao (former student at HCIL-University of Maryland) http://www.cs.umd.edu/localphp/hcil/tech-reports-search.php?number=2006-06 She implemented an interactive data sonification system that could be navigated in different ways. I worked with her to add spatial sound to her software and easy to localize sounds that changed in amplitude modulation according to the data magnitude (example: unemployment rates over a map of the USA). The auditory map was dispalyed over a hemi-cylinder centered around the person, and a head tracker allowed the person to 'look' (or rather listen) in different directions with the spatial sound modified accordingly. She was planning to make her software available for free but I'm not sure what's the status on that, or even if the spatial sound part was included in the final software because it requires HRTFs and the specific head tracker. hope you will find this information useful.
