Subject: Postdoctoral position: MRC Institute of Hearing Research (Glasgow) From: Michael Akeroyd <maa@xxxxxxxx> Date: Tue, 1 Apr 2008 14:23:06 +0100 List-Archive:<http://lists.mcgill.ca/scripts/wa.exe?LIST=AUDITORY>------------------------------------------- 3-year Research Scientist: How do hearing-impaired listeners orient to sounds? Ref: IHR08/185 MRC Institute of Hearing Research, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, Scotland. ------------------------------------------- The Scottish Section of the MRC Institute of Hearing Research (IHR) is offering a Career-Development Fellowship (CDF) to study how normal-hearing, hearing-impaired, and aided listeners orientate themselves to optimize listening and how they move their heads in response to sounds. This work will use IHR’s state-of-the-art “Vicon” motion-tracking system together with a ring of loudspeakers to present sounds from any azimuth. This is an outstanding opportunity for a scientist to work on an important new area of auditory science and to develop their skills and knowledge of hearing impairment. The MRC Institute of Hearing Research conducts world-leading research into hearing and hearing disorders. It offers a dynamic, multi-disciplinary environment in which to develop new skills and expertise in the field. The Scottish Section has excellent experimental facilities and an influential track-record in the sciences of auditory impairment, disability, and handicap, as well as in psychoacoustical experimentation and computational modelling. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to some of these other research projects. We invite applications for a postdoctoral fellowship offering a 3 year planned period of training and development in the field of auditory science. We particularly welcome applications from those who have recently completed their PhD training, or are wishing to move into this exciting research field from any quantitative discipline. Experience in hearing or motion studies is desirable and a sound knowledge of psychoacoustics, cognition, perception, experimental design & analysis, and computation (especially Matlab) would be helpful. You will also be given every opportunity to establish your reputation as a leader in this field. IHR strongly encourages peer-reviewed publication and attendance at conferences: as the successful applicant you will be responsible for publishing your research, and you can expect to attend at least one major international conference as well as annual UK conferences. IHR also offers many training opportunities through both formal courses and in-house teaching. The appointment is fixed-term for 3 years and will be to a starting salary in the range £25,368 - £26,953 (pay award pending). For an informal discussion about this position, please contact Dr Michael Akeroyd (0141) 211 4695 or email maa@xxxxxxxx Further details and links to the online application process are available from the Vacancies sections of the IHR website: http://www.ihr.mrc.ac.uk/vacancies. All applications must be submitted online through the MRC: http://jobs.mrc.ac.uk The job reference for the application form is IHR08/185 The closing date for applications is April 25th 2008.
