Hi, Following on from Fred Herzfeld's post regarding different combinations of frequencies having the same response at a given position on BM. Surely the ear doesn't need a given portion of the BM to 'know' what frequency it is dealing with, it simply responds to the input that it receives and passes the information on to the higher centers of hearing to be understood in conjunction with the input from the whole BM. Richard Lyon mentioned that temporal patterns will be different for different signals, but even if a signal can (or could) be constructed that has the same amplitude and temporal response at a given point on the BM it cannot have the same responses at all points along the cochlea. The brain can use more than one location to determine the input sound wave which will allow it to distinguish waves which are similar at a single point on the BM. What do you think?
