(Apologies for any cross-postings) Dear friends, We are pleased to announce the opening of a position for a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Victoria, Canada for 1 year. The focus of the position is what we call "computational ethnomusicology," and is based on a recently awarded grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), in a research program called ITST (Image, Text, Sound and Technology): http://www.sshrc.ca/web/apply/program_descriptions/itst/research_e.asp More specifically, we are interested in exploring the application of music information retrieval techniques and tools to the analysis of Afrocuban rhythms, as well as melodic contour extraction from plainchant. The goal will be to demonstrate the potential of automatic and semi-automatic tools to assist in the analysis for music for which there is no formalized notation. Candidates are expected to have a strong music background, experience with computers and programming, and knowledge of music information retrieval research. The work will be collaborative between: Dr. Daniel Biro (Music), Dr. Andrew Schloss (Music), and Dr. George Tzanetakis (Computer Science). Inquiries and CVs should be addressed to Prof. G. Tzanetakis (gtzan@xxxxxxxx). Salary will be at $40,000 CAD with a starting day of Summer or Fall 2007.
