Subject: Temporal Dynamics Workshop =?WINDOWS-1252?Q?=96?= August 26, 2007 From: Steven Greenberg <steveng@xxxxxxxx> Date: Tue, 15 May 2007 06:36:31 -0700 List-Archive:<http://lists.mcgill.ca/scripts/wa.exe?LIST=AUDITORY>--Apple-Mail-2--934471106 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/plain; charset=WINDOWS-1252; delsp=yes; format=flowed Temporal Dynamics in Speech and Hearing Antwerp, Belgium August 26, 2007 Biological signals are inherently variable, and sensory systems are =20 especially responsive to their temporal dynamics. Vocal =20 communication, including speech, exploits such dynamic sensitivity =20 for robust information transfer. Moreover, many species have =20 developed sophisticated strategies for efficient sensory transduction =20= of the external world. This one-day workshop will focus on those aspects of auditory and =20 higher-cortical function germane to analysis, decoding and =20 interpretation of biologically relevant information encoded in the =20 signal=92s temporal structure. Of particular interest is the role of =20 modulatory processes for encoding and decoding information germane to =20= communication and environmental navigation (e.g., spoken language, =20 auditory scene analysis, acoustic spatialization, musical dynamics) =20 as well as computational approaches for exploiting such information =20 for technology applications. The structure of this workshop departs from tradition in that it will =20= favor structured discussion, reflecting the collective knowledge and =20 wisdom of its participants, instead of long-winded presentations by a =20= few. Presentations will be short and will focus on one of the =20 following themes: (1) Auditory Temporal Dynamics and Informational Masking (2) Speech Dynamics and Its Relation to Information Coding in Spoken =20= Language (3) Temporal Dynamics in Speech Engineering Each themed session will consist of a few short presentations and =20 plenty of open discussion. The conference room=92s seating arrangement =20= will be semi-circular to foster interactive discussion. Among the participants will be: Les Atlas (University of Washington), =20= Doug Brungart (Wright-Patterson Air Force Research Lab), Pierre =20 Divenyi (EBIRE), Li Deng (Microsoft), Mounya El-Hilali (Johns =20 Hopkins), Steven Greenberg (Technical University of Denmark), Hynek =20 Hermansky (IDIAP), Tammo Houtgast (Free University of Amsterdam), =20 Christian Lorenzi (Ecole Normale Sup=E9rieure, Paris), and Shihab =20 Shamma (University of Maryland). We invite applications for participation. Please send a SINGLE =20 Powerpoint or PDF Slide describing your prospective contribution to =20 one of the themes (or suggest an additional theme). There will be no official proceedings of this workshop. However, =20 electronic versions of the presentations will be posted on the =20 workshop=92s website. The meeting will be held at the Park Plaza Astrid Hotel in Antwerp. =20 Workshop participants are eligible for the special conference rate =20 associated with Interspeech2007. Additional information about the =20 hotel is available at: http://www.parkplaza.com/antwerpbe. The =20 Interspeech2007 web site (http://www.interspeech2007.org/) will offer =20= hotel reservation information by the beginning of June. Organizers: Hynek Hermansky (hynek@xxxxxxxx), Les Atlas =20 (atlas@xxxxxxxx) and Steven Greenberg (steveng@xxxxxxxx=20 speech.com). To apply for workshop participation please contact: workshop@xxxxxxxx=20 speech.com The workshop website will be operational by June 10, 2007: =20 www.silicon-speech.com/workshop =20= --Apple-Mail-2--934471106 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/html; charset=WINDOWS-1252
<BODY style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; -khtml-nbsp-mode: space; = -khtml-line-break: after-white-space; "><P class=3D"MsoNormal" = align=3D"center" style=3D"text-align: center;"><SPAN style=3D""><FONT = class=3D"Apple-style-span" size=3D"6"><SPAN class=3D"Apple-style-span" = style=3D"font-size: 21.3333px; line-height: 18px;">Temporal Dynamics = in Speech and Hearing<SPAN class=3D"Apple-style-span" = style=3D"line-height: 18px;">
<P = class=3D"MsoNormal" align=3D"center" style=3D"text-align: = center;">Antwerp, Belgium
<P class=3D"MsoNormal" = align=3D"center" style=3D"text-align: center;margin-bottom: 10pt; = ">August 26, 2007
<P class=3D"MsoNormal" = style=3D"text-align: auto;margin-top: 3pt; ">Biological signals are = inherently variable, and sensory systems are especially responsive to = their temporal dynamics.
