Subject: PhD studentship From: Daniel Rowan <dr@xxxxxxxx> Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2006 15:27:01 +0100Dear Colleagues Two UK-EU PhD Studentships are available to work on a cross-disciplinary project funded by the UK Research Council’s Basic Technology Programme to understand and then exploit the acoustical measurement and imaging techniques used by bats and cetaceans to interact with their environment. The project is a collaborative venture between the Universities of Edinburgh, Leeds, Leicester, Southampton and Strathclyde and Fortkey Ltd and is co-ordinated by the British Geological Survey. The University of Southampton team, based at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), is working particularly with colleagues from the University of Leeds (Department of Biology) to develop experimental facilities to study echolocation and target discrimination in air and to study binaural aspects of echolocation. Applications of this research include bioinspired solutions to impaired binaural hearing in humans. Other groups will develop similar rigs to study bioacoustic signalling in water and in particulates. A considerable degree of team interaction will be necessary and it is important that the applicant can operate effectively in team research. The ability to work across traditional subject boundaries is essential. Applicants should have a background in either experimental or theoretical acoustics, hearing science, audiology or related fields. The Studentships are expected to start as soon as possible. Stipend is at normal EPSRC rates (currently £12,000 p.a.). Only fees available for UK and EU students.
