CAREER DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIP (REF: CS01): NEURAL MECHANISMS OF AUDITORY PERCEPTION AND ATTENTION MRC Institute of Hearing Research (Nottingham, UK) Recent developments in sensory neuroscience have provided direct evidence of how the central nervous system participates in conscious perception. Cutting edge technology allows scientists to record behavioural decisions and the activity of many neurons simultaneously in a freely moving, alert animal. This effectively integrates neuroscience, psychophysics and cognition within a single experimental approach. A three year postdoctoral fellowship is now available at the MRC Institute of Hearing Research (IHR), utilising this technology to examine directly neural responses to sound and their relationship to auditory perception while actively listening to sounds. It will be used to study the neural mechanisms of auditory detection, discrimination, and attention. IHR conducts world-leading fundamental and clinical research into hearing and hearing disorders. Research programmes include neurophysiology, psychoacoustics, functional neuroimaging, event related potentials, and applied and clinical applications. IHR is an ideal place to acquire new skills and develop your career. Applicants should possess, or be about to obtain, a PhD in one of the following disciplines: any aspect of auditory science; neuroscience; visual science. Strong candidates from other disciplines will also be considered. Experience in either neurophysiology or psychophysics is highly desirable, but training will be available. The appointment is fixed-term for 3 years and will be to a starting salary in the range £24,501 to £26,032 (pay award pending). For an informal discussion about this position, please contact Dr Chris Sumner on 0115 922 3431 or email chris(at)ihr.mrc.ac.uk. Further particulars and an application form (quoting ref. CS01) are available by: - Writing to Personnel, MRC Institute of Hearing Research, University Park, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK. - Visiting the “Job Vacancies” section of the Institute’s website (http://www.ihr.mrc.ac.uk) - Sending an email to jobs(at)ihr.mrc.ac.uk or phoning the IHR job line on 0115 951 8501 Applicants should send a CV and completed application form with a letter outlining interest and experience and details of at least two referees to be received by 25 February 2005. -- Dr. Christian J.
