Tympanic membrane can with stand the pressure variations of 600 dapa without any pain (which is done in tympanomery). During this, movement of the tympanic membrane is some thousands time more than the movement during the loudest possible sound. I don’t think tympanic membrane can differentiate between sound pressure level or pressure due to other sources. The mechanism of painfully sound is in the inner ear which needs to be probed. This will have great influence on hearing fitment and design.
