Postdoctoral position (Career Development Fellowship) in Compression Characteristics of Hearing Aids The Scottish Section of the MRC Institute of Hearing Research has a vacancy for a post-doctoral researcher in the compression characteristics of hearing aids. We seek a scientist to develop and deliver a new project that will study, in elderly hearing- impaired patients, the psychophysics of the "attack" and "release" times of compression and the links between those abilities and indices of auditory disability and handicap. The experiments will use complex signal-processing schemes to create the sound stimuli and to simulate and understand the effect of hearing-aid compressors. This is an outstanding opportunity for a scientist to work on an important area of auditory science and to develop skills in and an understanding of hearing impairment. The project will be led by Dr Michael A Akeroyd in conjunction with Professor Stuart Gatehouse. The Scottish Section is one part of the MRC Institute of Hearing Research and is based in a NHS teaching-hospital in Glasgow. We have state-of-the-art experimental facilities and an influential track-record in the sciences of auditory impairment, disability, and handicap, as well as psychoacoustical experimentation and computational modelling. The IHR as a whole obtained an Alpha-A grading in a review completed in December 2003. The appointment is fixed-term for three years and will be to a starting salary in the range £24138-£25467. It will suit someone who has, or expects to obtain shortly, a PhD in any aspect of auditory science, or in electrical engineering with experience in acoustics or signal processing, and who has an interest in hearing-aid processing or hearing-impairment. We particularly welcome applicants from those who have recently completed their PhD training or wish to move into this exciting research field from a related discipline. For further details and an application pack, please contact either Dr Michael Akeroyd (maa(at)ihr.gla.ac.uk) or Professor Stuart Gatehouse (stuart(at)ihr.gla.ac.uk), or see our websites at www.ihr.gla.ac.uk and www.ihr.mrc.ac.uk The MRC is an Equal-Opportunity Employer. --------------------------------------------------------- Yours Michael PS I will be at the ASA next week if anyone is interested in talking to me about this post *************************************************** Dr M A Akeroyd MRC Institute of Hearing Research Glasgow Royal Infirmary (Queen Elizabeth Building) 16 Alexandra Parade Glasgow G31 2ER United Kingdom 0141 2114695 (switchboard) 0141 5528411 (fax) 0141 2114867 (direct line) maa(at)ihr.gla.ac.uk http://www.ihr.gla.ac.uk http://www.ihr.mrc.ac.uk **************************************************
