Difference Tones ("Dr. Michael Gordon" )

Dear List,
         A colleague of mine has been looking for information on
'difference tones'. Those are tones created by the interval between two
wavelengths. If any of you know of references relating to difference tones
or what sort of set-up would be conducive to hearing difference tones it
would be greatly appreciated.
