I am pleased to announce a fully funded two year post-doctoral position in my laboratory in the Psychology Department at McGill University to study issues related to timing, perceptual thresholds for delay, the perception of simultaneity in multi-modal interactions, and/or perceptual thresholds for sound quality. Successful applicants should normally have completed a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology, Music, Statistics, or Computer Science (although other related disciplines will be considered), with strong quantitative and computer skills. Within the context of the research programme for which this position is funded, there will be ample opportunity for the post-doctoral fellow to develop and pursue independent work (as is consistent with being a post-doc). This position is part of a new interdisciplinary research centre at McGill, The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT), which offers the opportunity for the post-doctoral fellow to interact and collaborate with a large group of researchers interested in all aspects of the science of musical sound. Building on our multi-disciplinary strengths, we are interested in all those processes related to the science of musical sound, beginning with the creation of music in the composer's or performer's mind, through the performance of music, its recording and/or transmission, through to the reception of music by the listener. We are also interested in the ways in which vision, haptics and touch interact with music and sound. The CIRMMT community unites research professors and their students from four Quebec institutions - McGill University, l'Université de Montréal, l'Université de Sherbrooke, and the CÉGEP de Drummondville. While CIRMMT research and activities are centered at McGill University, they also take place at these three partner institutions. CIRMMT researchers come from four different faculties - Music, Science, Engineering, and Medicine. Other members of the CIRMMT community include administrative and technical staff, research associates, graduate and undergraduate students, visiting scholars, musicians, and industrial associates. Exchange programs are possible within the four Quebec Universities, as well as with our research partners CARROUSO and the Sound Quality Research Group (Europe) to accomodate students and researchers who wish to undertake special projects. A new CIRMMT research facility adjacent to the Faculty of Music at McGill is scheduled to begin construction in 2002, and will house state-of-the-art laboratories, a research sound stage (ECHO - the Electronic Concert Hall and Opera), and multimedia studios integrated via a high-speed electronic network.
