Some of you have commented on the sudden volume of postings to the AUDITORY list; there can be no doubt that traffic this month has reached unprecedented levels. For your amusement, I've counted the number of postings per month for the past two years: JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC 1997 13 17 48 32 55 41 22 15 7 14 32 5 1998 14 38 64 59 42 26 27 75 36 127 One option to reduce the burden on your mailbox from AUDITORY is to switch to the "DIGEST" format, which instructs the listserver to send you just one message per day, containing all that day's postings. Individuals can opt for DIGEST format by sending a message like: To: listserv(at)lists.mcgill.ca ------ set AUDITORY digest .. which should generate an automatic confirmation. (I've never actually done this, but I believe it works - I'm taking this from the online LISTSERV manual at http://www.lsoft.com/manuals/user/user.html ). You can also temporarily suspend messages from the list (with "set AUDITORY nomail") or remove yourself from the list directly (with "signoff AUDITORY"), although you can of course still do this by the traditional route of emailing your request to me or auditory-request. The remainder of this message is my standard admin reminder. - - - - - - - - - - ~/AUDITORY/aperiodic-reminder - - - - - - - - - - Messages for the entire list should be sent to AUDITORY(at)LISTS.MCGILL.CA (case doesn't matter). As an "anti-spam" measure, the Listserver will reject messages if it doesn't recognize the "From:" address in your message as exactly matching one of the list recipients. Regrettably, this results in a lot of false alarms; if you have trouble posting, please just let me know so I can fix your address. Requests to be removed from the list, notifications of changed details, or inquiries from people wishing to join the list should be sent to me at: auditory-request(at)lists.mcgill.ca which is simply forwarded to dpwe(at)icsi.berkeley.edu . The biographical database as well as an archive of postings are available on the web and via ftp. The entire member database (about 1MB, plain ascii text) is at: ftp://sound.media.mit.edu/pub/AUDITORY/member-list This page should probably be treated as privacy-sensitive, so please don't make web links to it. It is 'hidden' from casual browsing. The home page for the list is: http://sound.media.mit.edu/AUDITORY/ which includes links to the postings archives, as well a few other resources. (The postings archives are also available in the same FTP directory as the member-list, in files named postings-1993, postings-1994 etc.) -- DAn Ellis <dpwe(at)icsi.berkeley.edu> http://www.icsi.berkeley.edu/~dpwe/ International Computer Science Institute Berkeley CA Email to AUDITORY should now be sent to AUDITORY(at)lists.mcgill.ca LISTSERV commands should be sent to listserv(at)lists.mcgill.ca Information is available on the WEB at http://www.mcgill.ca/cc/listserv
