To continue with Fred's line of thinking: we generally perceive of lower
places as places of less energy; i.e., final resting places.  For most of
us our higher vocal ranges are places of greatest tension, whereas the
lower registers ar more relaxed, places we 'end up.'  Just to put a
topographical spin on things.
