I've noticed the same with guitarists. The higher pitched notes are on strings closer to your lap, hence the low notes are higher. Rather than use high/low, I usually say "the notes closer to your face" or some such, when dealing with newbies. Of course with piano it's all on one level plain -- any piano teachers out there?
