The GTF is inherently very nearly symmetrical (the usual approximate analyses are exactly symmetrical in frequency, as is the complex GTF sometimes used). The All-Pole Gammatone Filter (APGF), on the other hand, has a reasonably realistic asymmetry and some other good properties.
