In fact, lateralization of continuous sine waves is often ambiguous and the phase disparity-intensity disparity trade-off is frequency dependent. For good spatial separation of simultaneous signals, one needs onset cues. And what better onset cues does one need than those produced during phonation? Which brings us back to the need to maintain the AM quality of speech...
