there are various ways (and yet not a standard way) to assess the level of musical training of a person (see references below for an extended discussion).
My personal recommendation is to use the Gold-MSI (Müllensiefen et al., 2014), 38 self-assessment items about musical training but also about the relationship with music. It is widely used, so you can compare your data with the rest of the research.
