The division for Communication Acoustics at the Department of Medical Physics and Acoustics, University of Oldenburg, Germany, seeks as soon as possible a

Research Associate (m/f/d) in the field of speech enhancement for hearing aids
(salary according to TV-L E13, 75%)

This is a three-year term position suitable to pursue a PhD project.

Background: Deep learning applied to acoustic data has enabled breakthroughs for enhancing speech signals and specifically for speech separation in multi-talker environments. However, deep-learning algorithms are often not compatible with hearing aids, which require low-latency processing with relatively small models. In this project, we will create deep-learning solutions for next-generation hearing aids and explore the benefits of machine learning in realistic acoustic conditions.

The project is funded by the DFG collaborative research center CRC1330 Hearing Acoustics, which aims at a better understanding of human acoustic communication and is a long-term collaboration of researchers from Oldenburg, Aachen and Munich. For more information about the CRC see https://uol.de/en/sfb-1330-hearing-acoustics.

The Communication Acoustics Division is part of the Department of Medical Physics and Acoustics and offers an international scientific environment as well as access to world-class research facilities. For more information about the group and the department see http://ca.uol.de and https://www.uni-oldenburg.de/en/mediphysics-acoustics/.

Applicants for the position must hold an academic university degree (master or equivalent) in hearing technology & audiology, physics, electrical engineering, computer science or a related discipline or the candidate has to be close to obtaining their academic university degree. Furthermore, applicants should have solid knowledge in the following fields:

- Combination of deep learning and speech processing
- Acoustic signal processing
- Programming skills in python, for instance, pytorch or TensorFlow

A strong interest in interdisciplinary application-oriented work, familiarity with scientific tools, and good spoken and written English language skills are expected. The following skills and knowledge are a plus: a history of publishing in peer-reviewed journals that aligns with your scientific background, proficiency in running experiments on GPU-based computing clusters, and familiarity with speaker separation or speech enhancement using deep learning techniques. Furthermore, candidates should have at least some basic German language skills or should acquire them within the first 6 months.

We offer:

- Payment in accordance with collective bargaining law (special annual payment, company pension scheme, asset-related benefits) incl. 30 days of annual leave
- Support and guidance for your onboarding phase
- A family-friendly environment with flexible working hours (flexitime) and the possibility of pro-rata mobile work
- Benefits from the health promotion program of our university
- An extensive free further education program as well as our own scientific promotion of young academics (https://uol.de/en/school6/early-career)

The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increase the percentage of female employees in the field of science. Therefore, female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. In accordance to § 21 Section 3 NHG, female candidates with equal qualifications will be preferentially considered. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of equal qualification.
