Two
new PhD scholarships are available within the
AXD team at Imperial College London as part of the European Training Network (ETN) CherISH (Cochlear implants and spatial hearing: Enabling access to the next dimension of hearing). The successful candidate will also enrol as a PhD student, and complete
their PhD by the end of the appointment.
The CherISH doctoral training network involves physicians,
psychologists and engineers aiming at improving spatial hearing in cochlear implant users.

The two posts will focus on:

Project 1: Using artificial intelligence to optimise and maximise auditory training,
specifically for bilateral CI users.

Project 2: Explore the transferability of spatial hearing skills from virtual reality
to real life.
Essential requirements
-
An MEng/MSc in areas related to computing, hearing sciences, digital signal processing, music technology and/or acoustics
(equivalent industry experience will be considered)
-
Basic knowledge of computer programming for Virtual and Augmented Reality, ideally in Unity, but other similar development
platforms might also be considered
-
Knowledge of principles and techniques in acoustics and digital signal processing
-
Experience with sound processing and coding within Matlab, Python, _javascript_ or other similar environments/languages
Desirable requirements
-
At least two years of research experience in the areas related to digital signal processing applied to hearing sciences,
music technology and/or acoustics (equivalent industry experience will be considered)

Practical experience within a research environment and/or publication in relevant and refereed journals and conference
venues
-
Experience with using advanced statistical analysis methods and software, including machine learning techniques and approaches
-
Experience in spatial acoustics and immersive audio research and/or product development
-
Experience with integrating hardware and software components and interfaces
-
Experience of research in the fields of hearing science, hearing aids technology, human factors and experiment design
IMPORTANT
-
Candidates shall not have resided or carried
out their main activity (work, studies etc.) in the country of the host institution (UK) for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the recruitment date.

The annual fixed salary will be £40,221 (researcher
without the Family allowance) or £45,156 (researcher with the Family allowance).
