The SoNIC (Science of Neural, Interpersonal Communication) Lab at the University of Rochester (https://www.piazzalab.com/)
is recruiting graduate students interested in a PhD in Brain and Cognitive Sciences for the fall of 2023. Dr. Elise Piazza’s research focuses on the cognitive and neural mechanisms of human communication across the lifespan. She studies how coupling between
people’s brains and behaviors supports successful communication and learning, how listeners compute summary statistics (or concise “gist” representations) of complex natural sounds, and how speakers adapt their voices to listeners’ demands. She also studies
musical communication, such as how musicians’ brains coordinate during performance and how musical training impacts the hierarchical processing of sounds in the brain. The lab uses behavioral, fMRI, fNIRS, and machine learning approaches.
Our lab is committed to conducting inclusive, equitable, groundbreaking, and interdisciplinary research. PhD students in the BCS program will have
the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, and Data Science, as well as the Eastman School of Music, one of the world’s premier music conservatories, and participate in a quarterly Music Cognition Symposium on
campus. For more information about applying, visit https://www.piazzalab.com/join-us
and http://www.sas.rochester.edu/bcs/graduate/admission.html, and
feel free to contact Dr. Piazza (elise.piazza@xxxxxxxxx)
with any questions. Applications are due on December 4. Come join us next fall!
