Applications are invited for the
post of Research Fellow at the Department of Speech, Hearing
and Phonetic Sciences, funded until 31 March 2022 in the first
instance. This position presents an unusual and exciting
opportunity to work on a variety of projects in speech and
hearing science, all with important clinical implications.
One main project’s goals involves
the development of methods for measuring frequency following
responses (FFRs). The FFR is a scalp-recorded
electrophysiological measure which reflects sustained
synchronous neural firing in response to sounds along the
auditory pathway. Our aims here are: 1) To develop and test a
technique to minimise the time needed to measure the FFR, thus
making it more viable for clinical use; 2) develop stimuli
appropriate for assessing sensitivity to features crucial in
speech perception.
Other projects will involve the
development and implementation of appropriate auditory tests,
both for face-to-face and online testing. Some of these will
require testing in human listeners, who will need to be
recruited. There are also extant data sets that need analysing
and writing up for publication.
Depending upon the ongoing
COVID-2019 societal restrictions, it might first be necessary
for the successful candidate to begin this project while
working from home, but there is important component of
laboratory work which will require attendance at UCL.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The design, implementation and
running of experiments with human participants, using
primarily behavioural methods, sometimes in scenarios that
re-create everyday listening using virtual audio reality; 2)
The quantitative analysis of the data obtained, and other data
sets already available; 3) The writing, submission and
revision of papers to be submitted to appropriate
peer-reviewed journals, collaborating with others as
appropriate.
