--- We have extended the deadline and would welcome your applications ---
Interested in research on Augmented-Reality- and Robotics-based telepresence interaction, and a research position with a longer-term funding of 3 to 5 years?
We have two openings,
one Post-Doc position and one PhD position for an initial period of 3 years, with possibility of extension to up to 5 years,
starting as soon as possible.
Post-Doc 1: Research data analysis and management in the context of augmented reality (AR) and robot-based telepresence
PhD: Communication in Augmented Reality (AR) and robot-based Telepresence
Descriptions:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CO-HUMANICS project context
The position is part of the collaborative project
CO-HUMANICS funded by the Carl-Zeiss-Foundation for a duration of 5 years, in a collaboration
of 5 research groups at TU Ilmenau. The project investigates how co-presence of people can be improved by using AR technologies or telepresence via assistance robots. The main target group are senior citizens, with the aim of enabling social participation
and being together with friends and relatives even in phases of limited mobility or temporarily insurmountable spatial distance. In the project, different versions of co-presence systems will be developed and evaluated by means of a user-centric design approach. Non-seniors
will also be involved in the planned developments and tests. The results will thus be valid for a broad group of users.
Research group
The Audiovisual Technology Group (AVT) of the Institute of Media Technology (IMT) is part of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
of TU Ilmenau. We are an international, multi-disciplinary team with researchers working on different topics around immersive audio and video, audiovisual AR/VR/MR, networked multimedia, human perception, HCI and Quality of Experience.

Post-Doc: Research data analysis and management in the context of augmented reality (AR) and robot-based telepresence
In the collaborative project, the postdoctoral researcher addresses research questions
related to the analysis of the research data collected in the project
and its management. There is a certain degree of freedom in the design of the research questions and
activities, which should allow independent research work to be carried out in the thematic field of the project. Due to the
fact that the position is designed for several years, the research achievements
could, if desired and possible, provide a basis for a habilitation. Within the framework of the project, the candidate will assume central
coordination and management tasks in cooperation with the coordinator of
the consortium. Furthermore, it is expected that the candidate will take over organizational and
self-administrative tasks within the usual amounts.
Your profile
· University and doctorate degrees in fields such as computer science, human computer interaction, user experience (UX), neuro-informatics, media technology, electrical engineering, information technology, physics, or project-related subjects from neuroscience, psychology, or computational linguistics. · Theoretical knowledge and practical experience in several of the following areas: Statistical data analysis, Big Data, machine learning, computer vision, conversation analysis, research data management, reproducible research / open science, audio / video / multimedia engineering, telecommunications, network engineering, digital signal processing, conducting/evaluating empirical studies, modelling perception and/or cognition. · Good knowledge of programming languages and/or software tools such as: Python, C, C++, _javascript_, R, MATLAB; SQL, Lucene/ Solr/Elasticsearch/Kibana, CKAN or similar, Git, Deep Learning tools (e.g. Scikit-learn, PyTorch, Keras/TensorFlow, …). · Interest in cross-disciplinary topics at the intersection of technology and people · Very good communication skills, commitment, enthusiasm, ability to work independently, initiative and ability to work in a team. Experience in project management is an advantage. · Very good written and communication skills in English and German. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PhD position: Communication in Augmented Reality (AR) and robot-based Telepresence
In this collaborative project, the PhD researcher addresses questions related to human interaction with and communication via AR- and robot-based telepresence systems. The focus is on the implementation of technologies for audio-visual
interaction and speech communication as well as the analysis of linguistic and non-verbal communication and interaction, in light of the enabled co-presence experience. The project results achieved by the candidate should form the basis for a doctorate at
TU Ilmenau. It is expected that the candidate will take over organizational and self-administrative tasks within the usual amounts.
Your profile
· University degree in one of the fields such as media or speech technology or corresponding engineering or natural science subjects, such as electrical engineering, information technology, computer science, neuroinformatics, computer
linguistics or physics
· Expertise in one or more of the following areas: Audio/video/multimedia technology, speech processing, telecommunications / network technology, digital signal processing, statistical analysis procedures, implementation / analysis of empirical studies · Good knowledge in at least one of the programming languages and tools: Python/C/C++/ MATLAB, Unity/Unreal, or similar · Knowledge in areas such as pattern recognition, machine learning, conversation analysis or modelling of perception and/or cognition is a plus · Interest in multidisciplinary research at the interface between technology and human perception · Very good communication skills, commitment, enthusiasm, independent working style as well as initiative and team spirit · At least good proficiency in English, high proficiency in German (written and spoken) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to apply
