Audio/Speech/Language Research Scientist or Senior Research Scientist
MERL's
Speech & Audio Group is seeking an exceptional researcher in the
area of artificial intelligence, with particular focus on and interest
in audio, speech, and/or language processing. We are looking for
candidates with a strong background and experience in deep learning and
other advanced machine learning techniques.
Our research focuses
on cutting-edge projects for robust acquisition, recognition, and
understanding of speech and audio, such as end-to-end speech
recognition, speech and sound separation, deep-learning-based microphone
array processing, general sound scene understanding, audio-visually
grounded NLP, and other forms of multi-modal processing. In the past 10
years, our 6-member team has published over 150 publications globally
garnering thousands of citations, participated in and organized multiple
challenges, hosted dozens of interns, and won numerous awards.
As
a member of our group, you will conduct original research aiming to
advance the state-of-the-art in the field, proposing new projects with
long-term research goals and taking on a leadership role on some of the
group's projects.
MERL is one of the most academically-oriented
industrial research labs in the world, and the ideal environment to
thrive as a leader in the speech and audio field. MERL strongly supports
and encourages publishing and presenting research results in top
international conferences and peer-reviewed journals, collaborating with
university professors and students, and maintaining an influential
presence in the academic community, for example by participating in
technical committees or organizing workshops and challenges.
Qualifications:- A
Ph.D. from an internationally recognized institution in electrical
engineering, applied mathematics, computer science or equivalent.
- Thorough
knowledge and expertise in modern speech technologies as well as
relevant machine learning and optimization techniques.
- Strong publication record demonstrating innovative research achievements.
- Excellent programming skills, particularly in Python and deep learning toolkits.
- Strong teamwork, communication, listening, writing, and presentation skills.
Some background on MERL:MERL is the
fundamental US research lab of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, a
Japanese industrial manufacturer 100 years old with $42.9B in annual
revenue in 2019 and more than 146,000 employees worldwide. MERL has all
the resources and diverse technical specialties of a giant international
electronic technology company, but, with a staff of 80, has the very
intimate and comfortable environment of a small company. Management
gives researchers broad opportunities to pursue their own research
topics. This is possible because our parent company makes so many
different products that it is almost impossible to not find a valuable
application for our research ideas. Indeed, it is the opportunity to
solve real-world problems and transfer technology to Japanese
researchers for commercialization that make MERL so attractive to many
of us.
Our culture is friendly, open, and relaxed with many
collaborative projects within and between research groups and
disciplines. We are encouraged to publish and participate in the
academic community. We host many interns every year (more than 100 in
2019) and provide great creative environment. We are literally across
the street from MIT and down the road from Harvard University, and
regularly attend talks and collaborate with University researchers.
