[AUDITORY] Frontiers for Young Minds Collection: A World of Sound

Dear Auditory List,

The UK Acoustics Network (UKAN; acoustics.ac.uk) is editing a collection of articles about sound, aimed at a young audience, to celebrate the first International Year of Sound (sound2020.org; N.B. the year has been extended to 2021). This collection will explore the many faceted science of sound: how humankind and other animals perceive it, its many uses, and the problems it can bring to us and the environment.

More details can be found at:

The deadline for abstracts is 8th Jan 2021. Submission is via the link above.

Frontiers for Young Minds is a Frontiers group journal, which publishes “Science for kids, edited by Kids”, and aimed at an audience of ages 8-15. More details can be found here: https://kids.frontiersin.org/about/journal/.

This is a great opportunity to communicate your work a worldwide audience, to encourage kids into science, and also create a high accessible and professionally presented description of your work and field.

From the abstracts submitted, 15-20 will be selected on the basis of the abstract quality and likely appeal to a young audience. The authors invited to submit a complete (but short) article by 1st May 2021. Articles will be open-access and published free (yes, free!) of charge.

We will be seeking a balanced representation of topics across all of acoustics, including (but not limited to):

  • Aeroacoustics
  • Ultrasonics,
  • Bon-destructive evaluation,
  • Bioacoustics,
  • Biomedical acoustics,
  • Hearing/cognition/communication,
  • Noise/soundscapes/room acoustics,
  • Metamaterials,
  • Mathematical/computational acoustics,
  • Underwater acoustics,
  • Vibroacoustics.

Note that articles must be associated one of the topic areas at FfYM, articles must fit within one of the following areas: Biodiversity, Health, Mathematics and Neuroscience. We are nevertheless encouraging articles about acoustics in engineering, but please bear in mind that submissions will news to be in one of the above categories. Although the editorial team and network are UK based we welcome submissions globally.

The FfYM website contains lots of useful information about how the journal works, writing for a young audience. If you have any questions, feel free to get in contact with the collection editors.

Kind regards,

Chris, Francesco, Naomi, Gianluca and Charlotte.
