[AUDITORY] Competitively funded PhD project investigating the effects of noise exposure and musicianship on hearing

Dear AUDITORY list,

A competitively funded 3.5 year MRC Doctoral Training Partnership is being offered at the University of Manchester under the supervision of Dr. Samuel Couth, Prof. Chris Plack and Dr. Karolina Kluk.

The project “Understanding the effects of musicianship and noise exposure on real-world hearing abilities across the lifespan” aims to address the following research questions:

1. How does sub-clinical noise-induced hearing damage translate into real-world hearing difficulties, especially those that are problematic for musicians, such as tinnitus, listening effort and fatigue, musical competency, and speech-in-noise processing?

2. What are the mechanisms of real-world noise-induced hearing difficulties across the lifespan?

3. Can we detect early signs of hearing damage, potentially in children as young as 11 years old?

4. How do cognitive and/or auditory processing skills mitigate the effects of occupational music noise exposure on real-world hearing abilities?

We will use a variety of methods including questionnaires, psychophysical testing, cognitive testing and electrophysiology to explore these research questions. This information could be used to develop interventions to prevent hearing problems and for rehabilitation of real-world hearing problems, and ultimately ensure hearing and career longevity.
