Re: [AUDITORY] suggestion on screening hearing ability application
I have long considerd adding such an application to my
Daqarta software, but the problem is headphone
calibration. There would probably be no point to an
application that required you to buy a specific model of
expensive headphone, one that was readily available and
likely to continue in production in the exact same form,
such that I could provide a calibration curve and be
assured that the headphones you bought would be
comparable.
Cheap consumer headphones seem to come and go,
continuously morphing in style. Worse, many of the
modern styles might be hard to calibrate in a meaningful
way without in-ear measurement, since their position on
or in the ear can have a big effect on response... they
don't provide a natural alignment such as the old
circumaural styles. (Even those had serious variablity at
low frequencies due to leakage, but at least the problem
frequencies were lower than the ones you are probably
most concerened about.)
Daqarta already provides the means to do the calibration,
but of course that requires a calibrated microphone, not to
mention the need for some sort of standard coupler.
I'd be interested if anyone can suggest candidate phones
that are available, not too expensive, and have a stable
production history. Or any other ideas on resolving this
issue.... <g>
Best regards,
Bob Masta
