[ISMIR-Community] Postdoctoral position: Perception and computational modeling of musical orchestration

[Please distribute widely. Apologies in advance for cross-postings.]

A one- to two-year position for a postdoctoral fellow is available in the Music Perception and Cognition Laboratory (www.mcgill.ca/mpcl) in the Schulich School of Music (www. mcgill.ca/music) of McGill University. The lab is directed by Stephen McAdams. The MAKIMOno project (Multimodal Analysis and Knowledge Inference for Musical Orchestration) aims to create information technologies for human interaction with digital media that will change orchestration pedagogy, provide innovative tools for the computer-aided interactive creation of musical content, and lead to a better understanding of perceptual principles underlying orchestration practice.

Depending on background and skills, the post-doctoral researcher will be involved in: 1) project coordination, 2) symbolic modeling of orchestration effects and techniques discovered in machine-readable score through data mining and machine learning techniques, 3) coordination of perceptual testing of orchestral excerpts, and 4) integrating analyses and data into the Orchestration Research and Analysis Database (orchard.actor-project.org). This position provides an opportunity to acquire new skills in symbolic data mining, database development, and perceptual experimentation. The post-doctoral fellow would also interact closely with Philippe Depalle and Ichiro Fujinaga in the Music Technology Area of the Schulich School of Music, Denys Bouliane of OrchPlayMusic, Inc. (www.orchplaymusic.com), and with Philippe Esling and Carlos Agon at the Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique/musique (IRCAM) in Paris.

Candidates must have a strong background in research, be able to read orchestral scores and have completed a PhD in Cognitive Science or related field. We are especially interested in candidates with research interests and skills in database development (MongoDB, Solr, Django), data mining, machine learning and music perception and cognition research, but people with related research interests are also welcome to apply. Applicants must have received their PhD within 3 years of the application date. They should submit a cover letter, CV describing their fit for the position, and 3 representative papers, and arrange for 3 letters of reference to be sent to stephen.mcadams@xxxxxxxxx by 28 February 2018. Start date (negotiable) is early 2018. For further details, contact Stephen McAdams. The salary is $44,000 CAD.

The Music Perception and Cognition Laboratory has strong ties to the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT: www.cirmmt.org). McGill University is a world-class institution of higher education in the culturally and scientifically vibrant city of Montreal.
