Applications are invited for a three-year fully funded PhD studentship on an ERC Starting Grant (
Cracking the pitch code in music and language: Insights from congenital amusia and autism spectrum disorders; PI: Dr Fang Liu; www.personal.reading.ac.uk/~jk913059/) to examine the impact of language background on communicative abilities of ASD individuals through a series of behavioural and EEG experiments on music, speech, and emotional processing in English- versus Mandarin-speaking ASD individuals and controls.
This is an interdisciplinary project combining developmental/experimental psychology, language processing, music cognition, and cognitive neuroscience. Thus, the studentship will provide the student with great training opportunities to acquire these multidisciplinary research skills and knowledge. Housed in state-of-the-art facilities, the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences at the University of Reading has established itself as a leading centre for research. The School was ranked in the top 20 (15th) in the UK within its unit of assessment in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework based on research power. Overall, nearly 80% of our research was rated as internationally excellent and/or world leading. The successful candidates will join a thriving postgraduate research community of more than 70 PhD students who benefit from excellent support and resources from the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences (https://www.reading.ac.uk/pcls/) and membership of the University Graduate School (http://www.reading.ac.uk/graduateschool/). In addition, research and training facilities in Neuroscience are provided via the Centre for Integrative Neuroscience and Neurodynamics (http://www.reading.ac.uk/cinn/), and our in-house clinics, including the Centre for Autism (http://www.reading.ac.uk/autism).
Eligibility:
· Candidates should have a first or strong 2.1 degree in psychology or neuroscience and a distinction or high Merit in a relevant Masters qualification would be advantageous.
· The candidate should have a demonstrable interest in the topic and strong written and oral communication skills. In addition, advanced knowledge about statistical analysis and/or experience with EEG techniques would be advantageous.
· The three-year studentship covers fees at the UK/EU rate and a maintenance stipend of £14,496. International students are welcome to apply but must be able to pay the difference between UK/EU fees and international fees.
