Manchester Centre for Audiology and Deafness
ManCAD, part of the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre, has a world-leading reputation in the discovery and delivery of research that leads to improved clinical outcomes. We have an exceptionally strong, and expanding, research team. Recent appointments include Professor David R Moore, Professor Cynthia Morton, Professor Harvey Dillon and Dr Michael Stone, joining the established team of Professor Kevin Munro, Professor Chris Plack, Dr Karolina Kluk, Dr Piers Dawes, and Dr Rebecca Millman.

We have a uniquely wide scope of expertise including audiology, hearing science, otolaryngology, engineering and signal processing, biomaterials and graphene, auditory genetics, health psychology, health informatics, biomarkers, child development and communication. Our strengths in basic discovery include physiological mechanisms of hearing and hearing loss, development and plasticity of the auditory brain, precision medicine in hearing, auditory devices, and paediatric audiology. Examples of recent impact include: (i) national new-born screening and early intervention for babies with hearing loss; (ii) personalised and clinical verification of the hearing aid prescription; and (iii) a nationally funded specialist assessment and management centre for neurofibromatosis.

We have outstanding bespoke basic and clinical research facilities, including nine research-standard double-walled sound booths, and seven EEG systems. Our research benefits from access to clinical populations in the Greater Manchester area through strong collaborations with local NHS Trusts, the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, and the NIHR Clinical Research Facilities.

In addition to having a world-leading reputation in research and impact, Manchester is the home of audiology education and training in the UK, and has a distinguished track record in service provision and service development.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Kevin and Chris
